Betrayal

Section 1

"A power to be precise,” the female angel boasted. "An angel created for battle."

Her last words were spoken in a way that implied that conflict was imminent. She stood before the baffled foursome coolly, almost lackadaisically. Her stolid face held no discernible expression for the Guardians to pick out. If there was a single word that could describe her outward appearance, it would be ‘bored’.

The Guardians stared hard at the woman, peering past her human facade and into her true angelic form. The pitch-black eyes, white immaculate wings fluttering behind her, and the halo of pure light that hung over her head were all markers indicating they were dealing with a holy being.

"What's the plan here guys? We are very unprepared to fight an angel,” Emmanuelle whispered to her comrades.

The expressionless angel responded in answer to Emmanuelle's question. "Oh, you won't be fighting me, human."

Surprise shook through the ranks of the Guardians as they realized she had heard every word.

Just who would they be fighting if not her? Before the question could even be asked, the squirming cluster of demons opened and three figures stepped forth from behind her. The Guardians could feel their throats tighten.

Three more angels stood in front of them now. One with skin nearly charcoal color and thick dreadlocks falling over his face. Another, with pale skin and short, slicked-back, blonde hair. The final one was the color of tanned beach sand and was bald. They each wore long black trench coats over plain white shirts.

Their feet made no sound on the padded floor as they crossed. Their stares were unnervingly constant as if nothing else existed but the group of four that stood before them.

Ezekiel found it difficult to hold his gaze on them. He could feel their eyes reaching into him, peeling back the layers of his tattooed skin to expose soft and tender pink flesh. He suddenly felt naked in front of them.

"They're here to kill us,” Adam's voice was sharp and cold.

Ezekiel watched as Adam stared back at the angels defiantly. There was no fear or anger anymore. All he could see in Adam's unmoving stare was wild conviction. A conviction that was, apparently, contagious because now he felt a swell of determination as well.

Zeke’s eyes became steely. ”So what are we gonna do about it?"

The threesome closed the distance between them and the Guardians in silence. Their black fingernails grew curved and long and their eyes became dark as night. Their lips cracked open and they bared pointed fangs.

Adam gripped his dual scythes tightly and readied them to spill more angelic blood. He gave the warriors behind him one final look, then turned back toward the advancing threat, his teeth bared in a mighty scowl as he answered Ezekiel.

"Make them regret ever coming into our home."

Ezekiel could see his conviction spreading through the ranks of his comrades like a fervent pathogen, infecting and destroying all fear and doubt. Now they were ready. Now they were determined, determined to fight, to survive.
